Temporary Ordination, July 7
12:00 Noon. Ceremony. Check back, as the time is not confirmed.
It is customary in Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries to have temporary ordinations at the temples during the summer. This is an opportunity for young people age 7 and older to be ordained and to live at the temple during the non-school months. Here, they will learn about Buddhism, and have a chance to practice it.
Abbot Phra Ratsamee has been carrying out this tradition at the temple in Olympia for many years now. The participants stay about 2 weeks rather than the entire summer. It is an unusual opportunity in western countries.
The ceremony is quite moving, as parents hand their kids over to the monks, and the monks guide their kids through the process. Everyone is invited to observe.
